Porto has no shortage of excellent cocktail bars, but finding a genuine speakeasy is a little more difficult.
Unlike cities with dozens of bars using the speakeasy label, Porto’s secret bar scene remains relatively small. The best examples focus on concealed entrances, passwords, private locations, and spaces designed to feel removed from the streets outside.
Here are five of the best.
1. Apotecário
If you want the full secret bar experience, Apotecário is probably Porto’s purest speakeasy.
You will not simply search for the address, walk up to a large sign, and head inside. The location in central Porto is kept secret and revealed to guests as part of the reservation process. Once you receive the necessary information and work out where to enter, you descend into an intimate cocktail bar designed to feel completely removed from the city outside.
Apotecário opened in early 2025 and is led by bartender Pedro Duarte. Rather than handing everyone the same cocktail menu, the bar takes a highly personalized approach. Guests are asked about their tastes, preferences, and mood, and cocktails are created accordingly.
Seasonal and local ingredients play an important role, so there is no permanent fixed menu. The interior continues the apothecary theme with drawers containing ingredients such as herbs, spices, and botanicals. This is less a place for quickly ordering a gin and tonic and more of a guided cocktail experience.
Reservations are required and available through the official Apotecário website.
2. TOA
TOA takes the hidden bar idea particularly seriously. Even its official website describes it as a place that has to be “uncovered.”
Inspired by Asian aesthetics and the Japanese concept of omotenashi hospitality, TOA is hidden within an Asian garden in Porto. Guests receive instructions for finding the bar as part of the reservation process rather than simply following an obvious sign from the street.
Inside, the focus is on signature cocktails incorporating Asian influences accompanied by small plates designed for sharing. The atmosphere is deliberately calm and discreet, making TOA considerably more intimate than many of Porto’s busier nightlife spots.
There are also wines and collectible whiskies that are not necessarily displayed on the regular menu.
TOA’s own booking system maintains the sense of mystery. Reservations are generally made by inquiry, invitation, or recommendation/
Hours – Generally Tuesday through Saturday evenings. Check when reserving for the latest schedule.
3. ATMAN
One of Porto’s newest genuine speakeasies, ATMAN opened in early 2026 near Praça de Guilherme Gomes Fernandes.
The first indication that this is not an ordinary cocktail bar comes at the entrance. Look for a discreet green door and ring the bell. Traditionally, guests are given a password when they make a reservation, although passwords can also circulate through partner bars, recommendations, and regular customers.
Fortunately, forgetting the password does not mean spending your evening standing on the sidewalk. The bar has said that guests without one will not automatically be turned away.
Inside, ATMAN feels polished and intimate, with warm lighting, sofas, bar seating, and a more private area.
The concept is inspired by the Sanskrit word “atman,” which refers to the essence or soul of a person. That philosophy extends to a cocktail menu divided around ideas of mind, body, and soul. Drinks can involve unusual textures, aromas, presentations, and ingredients. There is also a small food menu designed to complement the drinks.
Hours – Every day from 7pm to 2am, look for the password here.
Location – Praça de Guilherme Gomes Fernandes 56
4. UNDER
UNDER is the newest addition to Porto’s secret bar scene and opened in August 2026.
Finding the address is only the beginning. The entrance at Pátio do Bolhão initially appears to lead into a tiny art gallery. At around six square meters, the gallery has been described by the owners as Porto’s smallest. The actual bar is concealed beyond it with a hidden doorway among the gallery’s mirrored walls.
Once you find your way through, UNDER combines cocktails, art, music, and food in a relaxed space hidden from the hustle and bustle of central Porto.
The cocktail list includes original creations while the food focuses on finger foods and plates for sharing. Music is also an important part of the concept with vinyl, DJs, and live performances incorporated into the schedule.
The rotating art component makes UNDER particularly unusual. The miniature gallery at the entrance is not simply a fake storefront designed to conceal a bar. It functions as an exhibition space for emerging artists.
Location – Pátio do Bolhão 35
Hours – At the time of writing, Thursday through Saturday from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Friday nights generally feature live music or a DJ.
5. Bigorna Social Club
During the day, Bigorna looks like exactly what it is: a barbershop, but there is another reason to walk through the door.
Hidden toward the back of Bigorna Barbershop, close to Mercado do Bolhão, is Bigorna Social Club, a small bar inspired by the clandestine drinking establishments of the 1920s.
There is intentionally very little outside signage advertising the bar. The idea is that passersby might notice something happening farther inside the barbershop and become curious enough to investigate.
Once evening arrives, the atmosphere changes. The lights come down, cocktails replace haircuts as the main attraction, and a pool table becomes one of the focal points of the room. The drinks lean toward recognizable classics with creative twists, while Friday and Saturday evenings tend to become livelier with DJs.
Of the bars on this list, Bigorna is the most casual. It feels less like an exclusive reservations-only cocktail experience and more like stumbling across a secret clubhouse hidden behind an everyday business.
Location – Rua de Alexandre Braga 62
Hours – Generally Tuesday through Saturday from 4:00 p.m. to midnight.
Which Porto Speakeasy Should You Choose?
For the most authentic secret-location experience, start with Apotecário. Not knowing exactly where you are going until you book gives it the closest connection to the traditional speakeasy concept.
Choose TOA if you want an atmospheric date-night destination with Asian-inspired cocktails and food.
For elaborate drinks and a password-at-the-door experience, ATMAN is one of the most interesting options.
If you want something new and creative, UNDER stands out for hiding its entrance behind an actual art gallery.
Finally, Bigorna Social Club is the best choice for a relaxed night with friends, especially if cocktails, DJs, and a game of pool sound more appealing than a formal mixology experience.
Are There Other Speakeasies in Porto?
You will see several other Porto bars described online as speakeasies, but the definition is often stretched considerably.
For example, Porto has excellent cocktail bars that use dark interiors, vintage decor, or 1920s inspiration without actually being hidden. There are also discreet bars that require ringing a bell but explicitly do not consider themselves true speakeasies.
For that reason, this list is intentionally short.
As with any genuinely secret bar, reservations, entrance procedures, and opening hours can change. Check directly with the venue before visiting, particularly for Apotecário and TOA, where figuring out how to get inside is part of the experience.
