Good maps make or break a holiday, particularly a self-drive or unguided one. We recommend GPS to all who can afford it. Anyone who has rented a car knows how hard just getting out of the airport can be without a GPS unit. When that is compounded by working in a foreign language a GPS unit soon pays for itself in reduced frustration, more time spent on holiday and less time arguing with one’s traveling companion.

When selecting a map or travel guide it is important that you select one that was extensively revised recently. Things change, and things have been changing fast in Portugal ever since they entered the EU. Secondary to that it is important to select a guide with tastes like yours. A backpacker does not need the tips on fine dining available in the Michelin Guides, for instance.
