Honestly, Living in Portugal Is Just… Nice

Written By Becky Gillespie

Ask anyone who’s done it and you’ll get a version of the same story. They came for two weeks of sun, went home, and couldn’t stop thinking about it: the small, ordinary moments, the morning coffee that costs about a euro, the neighbor who waves, and the way that nobody seems to be in a hurry to be anywhere.

If you’ve ever caught yourself daydreaming about it, here’s what the place is actually like once the holiday glow wears off.

The Calm

It’s one of the safest countries in the world, and you can feel it in the relaxing of your shoulders. You go inside to pay and leave your bag on the chair. You stroll back from dinner in the dark without a moment of worry. After a while, you realize that you can’t quite remember when the last time you felt that way back home – so at ease.

The Cost

Portugal is also kind to your wallet. Away from the big cities, a couple can have a really good life on roughly €2,000 to €2,300 a month. Lisbon and the trendy Algarve spots require around €2,500 to €2,800 each in Lisbon to live well, but head into the wider country and you’re getting something that would cost a small fortune most other places.

The Healthcare

For a lot of people this is what tips the scales. The system’s well regarded, you’ve got both public and affordable private options, and the private clinics are full of English-speaking doctors. There’s a relief in knowing that good care is around the corner and won’t break your bank.

The Good Stuff

Then, there’s everything else about Portugal that will simply grow to love: grilled fish for the price of a sandwich back home, beaches you could walk for hours, and local food markets selling produce fresh from the fields. Lunches can stretch into the afternoon because time here is a thing to be savored. It is the simple joys that give Portugal its charm.

Before You Pack

Here’s the part that surprises people most: everything is within simple reach. A drive from the top of the country to the beaches in the Algarve only takes 6.5 hours. Portugal’s Golden Visa gives you residency rights for an average of around seven days a year. You spend one week in Portugal and then stay in your home country for the rest of the year, and simply have the right to call Portugal home anytime you want.

After five years, you can apply for permanent residency, and your family can come along on the very same application. Think of it less as emigrating and more as quietly handing the keys to the future version of yourself.

Curious? There’s a Webinar on July 22

If your Portuguese daydream’s starting to feel a bit more real, our approved partner Jason Swan is hosting a live, easygoing session on Wednesday July 22nd at 5pm Lisbon time. Join a one hour session of relaxed conversation with an open Q&A at the end. It’s worth an hour of your day if Portugal’s been on your mind.

Jason will cover:

  • Where the Golden Visa actually stands right now
  • What it really costs to live well
  • The Permanent Residency process, bringing the family, and the seven-days-a-year rule
  • Which investment routes are still open
  • A proper Q&A, open to everyone on the call

They fill up quickly, so if you want a spot, REGISTER HERE
