Sintra National Palace

Located amidst the lush greenery of Sintra, the Sintra National Palace has a rich history that dates back to the 10th century. This palace has witnessed many periods of Portuguese history, becoming once a summer vacation home for Portuguese royalty. Let’s take a look at the history behind Sintra National Palace, its architecture, and what you can expect when visiting.

History

The Sintra National Palace dates back to the 10th century when it served as a palace for the Moors. Later, in the 12th century, after Portugal was recaptured by Christians, the palace became a residence for the Portuguese monarchy.

Throughout the centuries, the palace underwent expansions and renovations under different rulers, showcasing various architectural styles. It became a beloved summer retreat for Portuguese royalty.

The availability of hunting opportunities in the area, the refreshing climate during summer, and the necessity to seek refuge from plague outbreaks in the capital city all played a part in transforming the Palace of Sintra into a popular and frequent destination for royals.

Architecture

The palace’s architecture is a blend of different styles, showing its evolution over time. It combines elements of Gothic, Moorish, Renaissance, and Manueline architecture, creating a unique design.

The palace’s exterior is distinguished by its conical chimneys, which have become a symbol of Sintra. Inside, the palace features luxurious rooms adorned with colorful tiles, intricate carvings, and stunning ceiling decorations. The palace’s furniture and artwork provide a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of Portugal’s royalty.

Among the impressive spaces is the Swan Room, named after its swan-shaped ceiling decoration. This grand hall showcases the intricate craftsmanship and artistic skill of its time.
