Hidden just 300 meters off the EN109 road, between Porto and Aveiro, in the parish of Válega near Ovar, lies one of the most beautiful churches in Portugal—the Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria de Válega, also known as the Mother Church of Santa Maria de Válega. While those who appreciate simpler designs may find the church to be too eccentric, others may rate this church as one of their favorites in the country. For fans of both churches and azulejos, we can say with confidence that you’re going to love this Mother Church.
History
The patronage of the church was privately owned until 1150. From 1150-1288, the Monastery of São Pedro de Ferreira occupied the current site. Then, the patronage became the property of the Bishop and the Cathedral of Porto from 1583 to 1833. The works for the current church began in 1746 and took over 100 years to complete. Additions have been ongoing throughout the 20th century.
Beautiful Inside and Out
The exterior of the Mother Church of Santa Maria de Válega is covered with azulejos, traditional Portuguese ceramic tiles. What makes the Mother Church stand out is the unique arrangement of the tiles, which depict motifs from nature, saints, and biblical scenes. The tiles covering the church were laid in the 1960s and come from the Aleluia Factory based in Aveiro. There is also a beautiful bell tower with a round clock included on the left side of the church. Two very large panels dedicated to the Immaculate Conception are to the left and right of the entrance.
The interior of the church has strikingly bright tile panels and a beautiful ceiling covered in exotic wood that was donated in the mid-twentieth century by the Oliveira Lopes family. The stained glass windows are also from the 1960s. They were designed in Madrid and were donated by Commander António Augusto da Silva. We certainly think it is worth visiting the inside of the church for its intricate wood carvings, gorgeous altarpieces, religious artwork, and relics of historical significance.
