Lisbon and South of Portugal Tour
Enjoy historic and cosmopolitan Lisbon followed by a 3 night escorted tour of the important sights of central and southern Portugal including the UNESCO World Heritage city of Évora and a 2 night stay in the sunny Algarve. Weekly departures beginning in Lisbon on Thursdays and ending in Lisbon on Wednesdays. The Lisbon part of the package can be modified to accommodate airline schedules.
Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival transfer from Lisbon airport to hotel. Balance of day at leisure.Overnight: Hotel Real Parque (4 stars) or similar with buffet breakfast
Day 2
Morning half day tour of Lisbon.Overnight: Hotel Real Parque or similar with buffet breakfast
Day 3
Morning pick up at your hotel for the 4 day/3 night South of Portugal Tour. Head east through the Alentejo region with its vast plains, sun-washed villages and acres of olive trees, vineyards and cork oak trees to Évora, an enchanting walled city rising from the the plain. In Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you will walk through the narrow streets past monuments that are testaments to the long time habitation of the city: The Roman temple, the Romanesque-gothic church with its macabre Bones Chapel and the University founded in 1559. In the market place see the richness and variety of ingredients used in the local cuisine. Évora is also known for its handicraft items of cork, ceramics and copper. Free time to enjoy lunch and an afternoon to explore.Overnight: Hotel Mar d'Ar Muralhas (4 stars) or similar in Évora with buffet breakfast.
Day 4
Depart Évora in the late morning for Beja, a regional capital under Julius Caesar who called it Pax Julia after the peace made here with the Lusitani, the native tribe of fierce warriors. The historic town's 13th C castle keep is unusually tall. Climb the 183 steps to the top and be rewarded with a panoramic view of the countryside. Continue across the rolling hills of the Alentejo to the Algarve, the southernmost region of Portugal. Among the orange orchards is the town of Silves, the historic center of Moorish culture in the Al-Gharb (Algarve). The city is dominated by the red stone castle of Moorish orgins. Continue to Alvor, a pretty fishing village.Overnight: Alvor Village (4 stars) or similar in Alvor with buffet breakfast.
Day 5
After breakfast, enjoy a tour of the Algarve. Stop at Ponta da Piedade to admire the magnificent view of the Atlantic Ocean and the cliffs eroded by wind and sea. Continue westward to Sagres and the São Vincente Fortress said to be the location of Prince Henry the Navigator's famed School of Navigation. From here, Portuguese caravels in the 15th C were sent south to explore the African coast which ultimately led to the Portuguese rounding Cape Horn and reaching India. Drive along the seaside cliffs to Cabo São Vincente (Cape St Vincent), the southwestern point of Europe. Return to Alvor via the city of Lagos for a lunch stop (lunch not included), a cosmopolitan town with a marina and fishing port where you can sample Algarve dishes such as "cataplana", a seafood stew cooked in a copper pan of the same name. Local sweets include almond and fig cakes. Free afternoon in Alvor to relax on a beach or explore the town.Overnight: Alvor Village with buffet breakfast
Day 6
Say farewell to the Algarve this morning. The return trip to Lisbon will take you by the port city of Setúbal and along the Arrabida Mountain Range whose wooded hillsides are thickly covered with aromatic shrubs, trees and vineyards. Savor the sweeping views of the Troia Peninsula before arriving Lisbon in the late afternoon.Overnight: Hotel Real Parque or similar with buffet breakfast.
Day 7
Transfer service to Lisbon airport.Note: Prices are subject to change due to availability and currency exchange rates. The number of nights in Lisbon can be modified. Hotel in Lisbon can be upgraded (additonal cost) upon request. Hotels listed for the tour may be substituted by ones of equal value if necessary.
