Enjoy historic and cosmopolitan Lisbon followed by a 4 night tour of the important sights of central and southern Portugal including a 2 night stay at a resort in the sunny Algarve. Breakfast and dinner are included daily while on tour. Weekly departures beginning and ending on Tuesdays.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival transfer from Lisbon airport to hotel. Balance of day at leisure.
Overnight: Hotel Real Parque or similar (4 star)

Day 2

Morning or afternoon ½ day tour of Lisbon.
Overnight: Hotel Real Parque or similar

Day 3

Depart Lisbon in the morning heading north to Obidos, an enchanting walled city whose narrow cobblestone streets reflect its medieval heritage. In Alcobaça visit Portugal's largest church, the 12th century Monastery of Santa Maria. Within the church are the tombs of King Pedro and his beloved Inês de Castro who, due to court intrigue, was murdered by Pedro's father. Hear their bittersweet story and Pedro's horrific revenge when he ascended the throne. Further on is the fishing port of Nazare, a picturesque town with a popular beach. Then to Batalha to see the 14th century abbey, a masterpiece of Portuguese "Manueline" architecture. It contains the tomb of Henry the Navigator. Continue to Fatima, one of the world's great shrines where millions of pilgrims come each year to the site where the Virgin appeared to 3 shepherd children in 1917.

Day 4

Today we travel to the pretty spa town of Castelo de Vide, famous for its maze-like Jewish quarter of whitewashed houses and cobbled alleys. Marvao is a medieval hamlet set dramatically on an escarpment facing Spain. Then drive through green hills alternating with golden plains, to Estremoz and its famous marble quarries. Portugal is the world's second largest exporter of marble and these quarries date from Roman times. On to Evora, a living museum of tradition and history, handicrafts and gastronomy . Enjoy a walking tour of this enchanting walled city, designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and one of Portugal's treasures.

Day 5

Morning free to explore Evora on your own. In the afternoon, head south to the ancient town of Beja with its high castle keep and then to Silves, a moorish town rising out of organe groves. Its red-walled castle crowns the hilltop. On to the lovely fishing town of Alvor in Portugal's famous Algarve region.

Day 6

Explore the Algarve this morning. Moorish influences are evident in the architecture. A tour this morning will include a stop at Ponta da Piedade to admire the magnificent view over the Atlantic Ocean and the cliffs whose shapes have been sculpted by the erosion of the sea. Continue to the fishing port of Sagres for a visit to what was thought to be the famous navigation school of Prince Henry the Navigator. Then to Cabo Sao Vincente, the southwesternmost point of Europe. On to Lagos, a colorful town where you may wish to enjoy a delicious Algarve dish of fish and shellfish cooked in a copper pan (cataplana). Local suites include almond and fig cakes. Return to your hotel for afternoon free to enjoy the sea and sun.

Day 7

Say farewell to the Algarve this morning. The return trip to Lisbon will take you by the port city of Setubal and along the Arrabida Mountain Range, whose wooded hillsides are thickly covered with aromatic shrubs, trees and vineyards. Savor the sweeping views of the Troia Peninsula before arriving Lisbon in the afternoon.
Overnight in Lisbon at Hotel Real Parque or similar.

Check out after breakfast. Transfer to Lisbon airport.
