Moonspell is a Portuguese gothic metal band, formed in 1989 as Morbid God. After renaming themselves Moonspell in 1992, they released their first EP under that name in 1994. A year later they released their first album, Wolfheart. The band quickly became one of the most famous metal bands from Portugal. Moonspell first topped the Portuguese charts with the album Sin/Pecado, and they went straight to the top with the release of Memorial, in 2006. With Memorial, Moonspell became the first Portuguese heavy metal band to have a record certified gold status.
