All those Portuguese Kings, Queens, Dukes and Princes had to do something with all that gold and silver plundered from the new world. Besides financing their dissolute lifestyles they found time to patronize the arts. The ancient Brazilian's loss is your gain. If you are worried about a lot of guilt monuments to the egos of said Kings and Queens rest easy. Portugal has had a thriving modern art movement, in part because of the dictatorship prior to the Carnation Revolution. Like all repressive regimes it caused art to flourish as one of the few safe avenues for free, or at least implied, expression.
