Portugal calendar of events for September.
August 26 - September 9
Lamego (North of Portugal)
Festas de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios - This festival has one of Portugal’s most grand pilgrimages and its high point is the “Procissão do Triunfo” (Procession of Triumph) which takes place on the 8th at 4pm, and involves many beautifully decorated ox carts. There is also a torchlight procession: “Marcha luminosa” (Luminous March) that takes place on the 6th at 10 pm and the “Batalha das flores” (Battle of the Flowers) on the 7th at 3pm. The rest of the program includes musical shows, traditional dance, firework display, exhibitions, motorcycle rally, and other open-air popular activities
September 15 – October 15
Lamego and Douro region (North of Portugal)
Festas das Vindimas (Grape Harvest Festival) - During this event, the Douro, the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, will have festivities in the entire valley. There will be traditional meals of the grape harvest, tanks full of grapes, and traditional music at the participating estates. Standing out from the general program is the “Cortejo Etnográfico” (etnographic pageant), the “Entronização dos Novos Confrades na Confraria do Vinho do Porto” (introduction of the new members to the Fellowship of Port Wine) and the “Missa de Benção do Vinho Novo” (mass for the blessing of the new wine).
