In 1921 the the "National Championship" was created and was played every season with all the clubs participating in elimination rounds, the winners were named Champions of Portugal and it was the primary tournament in Portugal, more important than the round-robin competition itself created in the late 30's. For the 1938/1939 season, the name was changed for "Taça de Portugal" (Cup of Portugal) and the tournament turned into the second-most important in Portugal. It is the equivalent of England's FA Cup and follows a similar format.
The quarter finals provided a few interesting games. Benfica started with Rui Costa and Makukula on the bench, but had to bring them in in the second half to defeat persistent Moreirense. Rui Costa (68m) and Makukula (86m) scored to give Benfica a 2-0 win and a seat in the semi-finals. FC Porto couldn't do better than a 1-0 win over Gil Vicente with a goal by Tarik. Sporting of Lisbon waited until injury time to assure passage to the semi-finals with a goal by Purovic.
